Cosmeceutical Skin Care

Cosmeceutical Skin Care

The term cosmeceutical combines the words cosmetic and pharmaceutical. It generally refers to skin care products that contain higher concentrations of active ingredients compared to standard cosmetic products. These formulations are often discussed in relation to supporting skin health.

Cosmetic products available in supermarkets and salons may also contain active ingredients, though typically at lower concentrations. Cosmeceutical products, on the other hand, are usually formulated with higher levels of these ingredients, and sometimes a combination of several. Their use, suitability, and potential benefits should be discussed during consultation to determine whether they are appropriate for your skin.

How Much Does It Cost?

About Cosmeceutical Products

Cosmeceutical products are skincare formulations that generally contain higher concentrations of active ingredients compared to standard cosmetic products. They are considered in relation to concerns such as dryness or changes in skin tone and texture. Suitability and product choice should always be guided by professional advice.

Common Ingredients in Cosmeceutical Skincare

Some ingredients commonly found in cosmeceutical products include:

  • Vitamin  (Niacinamide) – supports the skin’s barrier function and may assist with hydration.
  • Vitamin A (Retinol) – often included in formulations that target changes in skin tone or texture.
  • Vitamin C – an antioxidant that may support skin health and protection against oxidative stress.
  • Tranexamic acid – helps reduce melanin production to improve hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone.
  • Kojic acid- depigmenting and skin brightening effects by inhibiting the enzyme tyrosinase, which is responsible for melanin production (helps to reduce appearance of dark spots, freckles, and age spots).
  • Licorice Root extract – offers soothing and skin-brightening benefits
  • Hyaluronic acid – helps attract and retain moisture, supporting skin hydration and plumpness.
  • Salicylic acid – commonly used to help exfoliate, clear pores, and reduce acne-related concerns.
  • Other antioxidants – such as Vitamin E, green tea, Ferulic acid and Coenzyme Q10, which may help protect the skin from environmental stressors.

How Cosmeceutical Products May Be Used

At The DOC Clinic, a range of cosmeceutical products may be discussed as part of skincare planning. These products are considered in relation to concerns such as:

  • Changes in skin texture
  • Areas of dryness
  • Changes in skin tone
  • Scars
  • Stretch marks

Cosmeceutical products differ from standard cosmetics in that they often contain higher concentrations of active ingredients. Their suitability and role in your overall care plan will be discussed during consultation.

Can You Use Cosmeceuticals After a Treatment Such as Laser or a Chemical Peel?

Cosmeceutical products may sometimes be included in a skincare plan before or after procedures such as peels or laser therapy. The timing and type of products used can depend on your skin type, the procedure, and individual factors. At The DOC Clinic, product use is discussed during consultation to ensure safety and suitability.

Is There Anything to Consider Before Buying or Using Cosmeceuticals?

Not every product is suitable for all skin types. It is recommended that you seek professional advice before starting new cosmeceutical skincare. A consultation and skin assessment can help determine which products may be appropriate for you.
